Taylor's & Fonseca

The port houses · Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from Oporto

Across the Douro from Oporto there's a whole hillside of low rooftops, and under every one of them a winery. That's Vila Nova de Gaia, where port has been aged since it was shipped downriver in rabelo boats: the wine is made in the Douro, a hundred and fifty kilometres inland, but it's aged here, in the Atlantic damp. We work with two of the historic houses — Taylor's and Fonseca — which keep their original caves at the water's edge, and with WOW — World of Wine, the cultural district built above them: fifty-five thousand square metres with five museums, restaurants and terraces looking out over all of Oporto. No other winery in the catalogue has that combination: you can spend an hour here or three days, rain or shine, and there's always another step up — from three house ports to four Vintage ports tasted in a private room with a sommelier. And it's half an hour from the airport.

What you can do here

The WOW Day Pass

Five museums · 48 (or 72) hours' validity · own rate for children 5–14

Entry to the district's five museums — the Oporto wine museum, the glassware collection, the chocolate museum, the cork museum and the museum of the region's history — valid 48 hours, so you don't have to do it all in one day. Two versions add a historic cave visit for less than it costs on its own.

Taylor's: the visit and tasting

Audioguide in 13 languages, one hour, or private guide, half an hour · six tasting steps · daily 10:00–19:30

Taylor's caves are toured with an audioguide in thirteen languages — at your own pace — or with a private guide, who tailors what's told to what the group already knows. The visit always ends in a tasting, and that's where you choose how far to go: from three house ports up to the Vintage ports by year.

Fonseca: the visit and tasting

Free or guided visit · five tasting steps · daily 11:00–19:00

The house next door, with its own corridor of casks and its own tasting scale, shorter and cheaper to start: the Fonseca Experience is a free visit and three ports, rising to the Vintage. It also has the food pairing — a 20-year Tawny and a Vintage with Rabaçal cheese and Iberian ham — the way to stay for the whole afternoon.

Fado night, with dinner

Daily at 18:00 · guided visit, two ports and live fado · optional three-course Portuguese dinner

Every evening at six, in Fonseca's caves: a guided visit, two ports and live fado among the casks. And, if you want it, dinner afterwards — a three-course Portuguese menu — in the WOW district. The plan that works best for a group travelling together, and the only experience in the catalogue that puts winery, dinner and music into the same night.

Masterclasses and workshops

Guided visit plus a private room with a Port Expert · cocktail workshops 15–40 at Taylor's, 10–20 at Fonseca · book 36 hours ahead

A guided visit, then a private room with a Port Expert. At Taylor's you taste four Vintage ports by year — one session pairs 1994, 2003, a 50-year Tawny and a Very Very Old — or the Tawnies at 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 years, one after another. At Fonseca, three decades of Vintage. Both houses also run a port cocktail workshop, which works best on anyone who says they don't like port.

For groups and companies: the rooms

Taylor's: Private Cellar up to 30, Board Room and Private House up to 10, Wine Library up to 2 · Fonseca: one guide per 30 people

Both houses rent rooms inside the caves and put on a private guide for the whole group. One detail changes the maths for a large group: at Fonseca the guide is charged per guide, not per person — one for every thirty — so the more people travel, the less it costs each of them.

There's more worth knowing exists, even if it doesn't fit a tier: opening a Vintage bottle with red-hot tongs, the house ritual, with or without a private room; and Taylor's Vintage Exclusive — a private visit with a host, reserved access to the Vintage cave, the bottle of the client's choice opened with tongs, a comparative tasting in a private room, and the empty bottle in its wooden box to take home. Any of the above can be topped up with cheese boards, 36-month Iberian ham, bread with Taylor's own oil, or chocolate truffles. The transfer from the hotel is quoted separately and always recommended: there's drinking involved.

Why a rainy day isn't a lost day here

It's the only stop in the whole catalogue that works exactly the same in sun or storm, because it's indoors and it's enormous. In northern Portugal, in January, that's not a small thing: it's the difference between a complete week and a week with one day written off. And it's booked with a QR code, with no need to wait for anyone to answer an email.

How to book it

Taylor's and Fonseca are not included in the price of any stay. We set the time, notify the winery and arrange the transfer if wanted; it goes inside the stay or gets added separately, whichever you prefer. Taylor's opens daily 10:00–19:30 (last entry 18:15), Fonseca 11:00–19:00 (last entry 18:00), with 15 minutes' grace on the booked time. Visits are attended in Portuguese, English and Spanish, and other languages on request; the building is accessible, with a lift.
