Sotogrande Alto · Cádiz
It has five tee options per hole, from 6,721 metres at the championship tees to just over five thousand at the forward ones, which makes it unusually comfortable for a mismatched group. The fairways are wide and the greens enormous, built to USGA standard with gentle slopes you can't read at a glance. Only five holes have water in play. That combination — generous off the tee, demanding on the green — is exactly what a group travelling together needs: the high handicap doesn't lose balls, and the low handicap fights it out on the putts. Cabell B. Robinson, a student of Robert Trent Jones, designed it across two adjoining valleys in upper Sotogrande. And then there are the views. From up there you can see the Mediterranean, the Andalusian hills and the Strait of Gibraltar, with Africa on the other side, all at once. Few courses in the catalogue have a backdrop like this.
The course for the mismatched group. Four friends travel and two play far better than the other two. Here that stops being a problem: five tee options and wide fairways mean nobody spends the afternoon hunting for balls while the others wait.
