This is the SO/ Sotogrande's own course, the hotel of our three stays, with a golf academy opened not long ago. For a group that wants to play without getting in a car every day, it's the natural base of the area. It was born in 1998 as Almenara, with twenty-seven holes across three nines — Pines, Cork Oaks and Lakes — designed by Dave Thomas, a Ryder Cup player turned architect. Today it's The Alto Club: a single 18-hole, par 71 course, remodelled by Manuel Piñero, over fifty-one hectares on the edge of the Los Alcornocales Natural Park. Its tees have names of their own, and they say a lot about how the game is understood here: G.O.A.T., Bull, Vulture and Deer. Four ways to play the same course according to what you actually hit, not what you'd like to hit.

The home course. You walk out of the hotel. In a week that also visits Valderrama, La Reserva or San Roque, having your own course right at your room's door is what lets you play every single day without the trip turning into a string of transfers.
