This isn't a getaway with a friendly round at the end. It's an official tournament, with scorecard, committee and prize-giving: three rounds on Sir Henry Cotton's courses — the Royal on the 12th and 14th, the Ocean on the 13th — closing with a cocktail and dinner. There are prizes for the top two finishers, best scratch, nearest the pin, longest drive and Texas Scramble, so you're competing right up to the last day even if you're not in the lead. And the Royal's 16th — two hundred and twenty-four metres over three red cliffs — is played with a scorecard in hand, which is a different thing altogether. Dates are fixed and places limited: 11 to 15 February 2027.

One of only two weeks played with a scorecard. Vale do Lobo is played year-round, but only two weeks are played competitively: this one in February and the Amateur Week in January. If what you're after isn't a round but a result, these are the two.

Handicap: maximum 26 for men, 32 for women.
A 30% deposit is due on confirmation, non-refundable, with the rest due 45 days before arrival. Cancellation fees: 30% up to 45 days out, 50% from 45 to 31 days, and 100% from 30 days out, for no-shows or early departures. Cancelling within 14 days of booking, with more than 60 days still to go before arrival, refunds everything paid, deposit included. We recommend taking out cancellation insurance.
