Penina

The same-day second round is free

The second round of the same day is free. You book it on the course after check-in, at no cost at all, so anyone who wants to play thirty-six holes a day can. No other resort in the catalogue does that, and it's the reason a week here delivers far more than the brochure says. The course for that first round is the Championship, which Sir Henry Cotton built in 1966 over former rice paddies, planting the eucalyptus trees one by one to give relief to a plain that had none. It was the Algarve's first 18-hole course and has hosted the Portuguese Open ten times, more than any other course in the country. Next door is the Resort Course, shorter and gentler, for that second round or for the day your legs ask for a truce. Around it, Alvor is still a fishing village with a working harbour, three kilometres of beach and boardwalks over the estuary. This is the most Portuguese, least expensive stretch of the Algarve, and it shows in the price of these three stays.

Three ways to stay

Championship

from €485

THREE NIGHTS · THREE ROUNDS · CHAMPIONSHIP AND RESORT COURSE · WINE TASTING AT THE ESTATE

Two rounds on the Championship and one on the Resort, plus as many free same-day second rounds as you want to play. Three nights at a five-star hotel, for what a weekend costs anywhere else. And an afternoon at Morgado do Quintão, a quarter-hour from the hotel: play in the morning, taste at four, and be back before dinner. It's the closest winery to the hotel in our entire catalogue.

Alvor

from €795

FIVE NIGHTS · FIVE ROUNDS · CHAMPIONSHIP AND RESORT COURSE · LUNCH AT THE ESTATE

Three on the Championship and two on the Resort: a round a day, no rest days, and never getting in a car. With the free second rounds, anyone who wants can finish the week with ten rounds played. And this is where the free second round really pays off: by doubling up on one day, you free up an entire day, and that day is spent at the long table of Morgado do Quintão — three courses, three estate wines and the vines right in front of you — fifteen minutes from your room.

Cotton Week

from €1,130

SEVEN NIGHTS · SEVEN ROUNDS · CHAMPIONSHIP AND RESORT COURSE · WINE TASTING AND LUNCH AT THE ESTATE

Four on the Championship and three on the Resort, with the seventh round on arrival or departure day depending on your flight. It also includes a complimentary dinner at the Sagres, the Sir Henry Cotton Club, or L'Arlecchino. And both sides of the winery, which here sit side by side: the afternoon tasting after a round, and the lunch among the vines on the day you double up.

Per person in a Mountain View double room, bed and breakfast · low season · minimum stay of three nights.

Morgado do Quintão is a quarter of an hour from here — practically neighbours — between Silves and Lagoa. The same family has worked that estate since 1810: vines, olives and almonds, with a thousand-year-old olive tree among the vines and a long table set beneath it. No tasting room, no counter; you eat and drink where it's grown. And because it's so close, the four o'clock tasting doesn't need a free day: play in the morning, eat, and by four you're among the vines. It's included in the price of all three stays.

Rest of your trip, your way

These stays are the skeleton, not the whole trip. On top of them we build whatever you want to experience, booked and quoted firm: Alvor and its working fishing harbour, the boardwalks over the estuary and three and a half kilometres of beach; Portimão and Lagos; the Sagres coast; the resort's own spa; and, fifteen minutes away, everything Morgado do Quintão does besides tastings — the long table under the olive tree, oysters at sunset, or a cooking class with their chef. Tell us who's travelling and what they feel like. Designing your bespoke trip costs nothing: the initial proposal and one revision. From the third version onward, finalising the itinerary costs €100, fully deducted from your trip's price if you book it with us.

Extras and add-ons, with their price

  • Swap the winery experience: the afternoon tasting for the lunch at the long table, or vice versa, paying the difference.
  • A cooking class with the estate's chef: the day's market in Silves together, Algarve cooking at his side, and lunch on what you've cooked, with the house wines. 10am to 3:30pm, maximum ten people. It's the best option we have for non-golfers: it fills exactly the time the rest of the group spends on the course.
  • Sparkling wine and oysters at sunset: ninety minutes, six oysters per person, maximum twenty guests. At the end of the week.
  • Dinner in the vineyard, 7 to 9:30pm, three courses and three wines. High season only, which isn't the season of these prices.
  • Transfer to the winery, round trip from the hotel. We always recommend it: there's drinking involved in a tasting.
  • Wine shipped home. Bought at the estate itself, with shipping organised by the winery.
  • Accessibility: the estate is not fully adapted for reduced mobility, and the visit runs through vineyard and olive grove. If anyone in your group needs this, let us know when booking and we'll check before confirming anything.
  • Half board: €50 per person per dinner. Drinks not included.
  • Non-playing companion: a 10% discount sharing a room.
  • Groups: one free place for every eight paying guests.
  • Pool View, Studio and Junior Suite rooms: available on request.
