Costa de la Luz

Where the westerly wind reaches the scorecard

The westerly wind comes in through El Puerto de Santa María and you feel it on the scorecard. That's the difference with this week: Villanueva Golf comes into play, a more open course with a layout that resembles neither Nicklaus's parkland nor Olazábal's lakes. Anyone who already knows the area usually asks for this one. Beyond that, the formula is the same as the Circuito de Cádiz: seven nights, five rounds, three courses and a single bed. No hotel change mid-week and none of the three courses is far — Montecastillo and Sherry Golf are both in Jerez, Villanueva is in El Puerto, Costa Ballena in Rota. What changes, again, is where you sleep: three of the five rounds are played at the course of the hotel, so choosing a base means choosing which course you get to know properly and which one you visit just once. Three different landscapes in one week, which is exactly what this fiche sells.

Two ways to stay

Montecastillo Base

from €945

SEVEN NIGHTS · 3 ROUNDS AT MONTECASTILLO, 1 AT SHERRY GOLF AND 1 AT VILLANUEVA · TWO WINERIES

A five-star in a nineteenth-century castle, with bed and breakfast and the Nicklaus course beneath the window. Montecastillo and Sherry are both in Jerez, so you only really drive one day, the Villanueva one. And Tradición is ten minutes downhill. Winter window: 22 November to 25 February.

Costa Ballena Base

from €1,085

SEVEN NIGHTS · 3 ROUNDS AT COSTA BALLENA, 1 AT MONTECASTILLO AND 1 AT VILLANUEVA · TWO WINERIES

A four-star eight hundred metres from the beach, with dinner included all seven nights and the nine-hole PAR 3 as a second round on playing afternoons. Here Sherry is swapped for three rounds on Olazábal's twenty-seven holes, Villanueva is twenty minutes away and Sanlúcar a quarter-hour. Winter window: 1–14 November and 5–28 February.

Per person in a double room · each base has its own regime and its own winter window, indicated with it · two wineries included, in Jerez and in Sanlúcar.

The two no-golf days don't stay empty, and wine comes into the price twice. Bodegas Tradición, in Jerez, fills one: they bottle nothing under thirty years old, and among the casks keep a picture gallery of Spanish painting from the 14th to 19th century and the oldest surviving archive of Jerez wine, from 1650. Hidalgo La Gitana, in Sanlúcar, fills none: it opens at seven in the evening, once you've already played, and you taste the manzanilla among candles, drawn from the cask with a venencia.

Rest of your trip, your way

Any of these stays is the skeleton, not the whole trip. On top of it we build whatever you want to experience, booked and quoted firm: a table at the area's best restaurants, spa and wellness, city visits, and bespoke experiences at our wineries, from a sunset tasting to a paired dinner inside the winery itself. Tell us who's travelling and what they feel like. Designing your bespoke trip costs nothing: the initial proposal and one revision. From the third version onward, finalising the itinerary costs €100, fully deducted from your trip's price if you book it with us.

Your trip includes

Included

  • Half board based at Costa Ballena; bed and breakfast based at Montecastillo.
  • Five green fees across the three courses of the base chosen.
  • The nine-hole PAR 3 as a second round on playing days at Costa Ballena, when based at that hotel.
  • The visit and tasting at Bodegas Tradición (Jerez): winery, picture gallery and a tasting of VOS and VORS over thirty years old, with a snack, in Spanish or English. One of the two no-golf days.
  • The night visit at Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana (Sanlúcar), at seven in the evening: a walk among barrels and candles, with two manzanillas en rama, an amontillado Napoleón and an oloroso Faraón drawn from the cask with a venencia. An hour and three-quarters, after the golf, on an ordinary afternoon.
  • One spa access per person and stay, ninety minutes, based at Costa Ballena.
  • All tee times and the two winery visits booked and managed by Ophir.
  • The order of the courses is set by tee-time availability; confirmed before travel.

Not included

  • Airport transfers.
  • Transfer to the winery and between courses.
  • Buggy.
  • Pull cart.

  • Golf equipment rental.

  • Based at Montecastillo, lunches and dinners either.

Extras and add-ons, with their price

  • Eat or dine inside La Gitana's winery, at its EntreBotas restaurant: from the menu with a five-wine tasting to the tasting menu paired dish by dish. Quoted per group.
  • Noche en Rama, in La Gitana's cathedral winery. A candlelit walk among the barrels, a tasting of Manzanilla en Rama drawn straight from the cask, and dinner at the heart of the cathedral winery: a seven-course tasting menu with seven paired wines and live music. From €80 per person. Held on select dates through the year, with very limited places, and it's the most requested night in the Marco: it sells out well in advance. Let us know when booking and we'll ask for dates.
  • La Gitana's night visit —among candles, at seven in the evening, once you've already played— can be added to any stay that doesn't include it, provided a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday falls within your travel dates.
  • The winery just for the two of you. Tradición opens a private visit — two or three hours, no one else present — that adds the brandy and the 1650 historical archive, not part of the normal visit, with free tasting of its oldest wines and tapas in the Museum or one of the courtyards. €630 for two people, €110 for each additional person. Our anniversary product.
  • Step up the tasting at Williams & Humbert: twenty and thirty-year VOS and VORS soleras — a thirty-year amontillado, a thirty-year palo cortado, a twenty-year Pedro Ximénez —, the vintage collection, Dos Maderas rum or Gran Duque de Alba brandy, paying the difference.
  • One more tasting, or an Iberian snack board to go with it.
  • Transfer to the winery, round trip from the hotel. We always recommend it: there's drinking involved in a tasting.
  • Wine shipped home. Bought at the winery itself, shipped to your country.
  • Half board, based at Montecastillo: €33 per person per day — at Costa Ballena dinner is already included.
  • Buggy: at Montecastillo, €45 per 18 holes for up to two players, with a 15% discount from four days of play; pull cart €7. At Costa Ballena, balls and cart €26 a day, €140 the week.
  • Spa: €25 per person per session at either base.
  • Groups: one free professional for every seven paying players at both bases; one group leader for every fifteen at Montecastillo and for every eleven at Costa Ballena.
  • Single room and higher categories: available on request.

Price

From €945 per person

Depending on the base chosen: from €945 (Montecastillo Base) or from €1,085 (Costa Ballena Base). Per person in a double room; each base has its own regime, winter window and cancellation terms.

Booking conditions

Maximum handicap 28 for men and 36 for women, with certificate, at the Montecastillo base. The order of the courses is set by tee-time availability and confirmed before travel. At Montecastillo the club requires a buggy on tee times before 11am, except from 22 November to 25 February. Each base has its own regime, its own winter window and its own cancellation terms, because they are two separate contracts. Bodegas Tradición receives groups of up to ten or twelve people, never mixed with other visitors; from twelve players onward the group is split into two consecutive sessions. La Gitana's night visit is held Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 19:00, in English on Wednesdays; the day is fixed when tee times are confirmed. Both wineries close bookings in advance and are reserved together with the stay.

Cancellation policy

A 30% deposit is due on confirmation, non-refundable, with the rest due 45 days before arrival. Cancellation fees: 30% up to 45 days out, 50% from 45 to 31 days, and 100% from 30 days out, for no-shows or early departures. Cancelling within 14 days of booking, with more than 60 days still to go before arrival, refunds everything paid, deposit included. We recommend taking out cancellation insurance.
